Browser hijackers, such as, are the major part of the modern world. These programs dwell in the web and interfere us to use it, cluttering our computers and making them completely unusable. These programs aren’t even made: they’re just copied. You can just access the website in Dark Web, and buy any virus, including a browser hijacker, for a moderate price. That hijacker is ready to use and you will just need to make minor changes to its design, to make it slightly different from the other ones. is a tool that shows you various forms of advertisement and makes you click on links and banners, to generate revenue. Later in this article, we’ll explain how scammers receive money from it, and how it got into your computer.

How works adware

As a program,’s complexity and level of threat are close to nil. It’s not too intricate, and it can’t do anything except changing your browser settings. In fact, when the changes are made and you see website instead of Google or Yahoo search or whatever you prefer – its mission is done and it just exists without doing anything. It doesn’t show you ads and doesn’t redirect you to the suspicious websites. This is the function of the fake search engine.

Let’s make it clear: one does not simply create a search engine. It takes billions of dollars and hundreds of employees to create such a system and to maintain it. So, if you see a program or a website that offers you some improved search, and you don’t know its name – it’s a trap. Usually, such “search engines” use the famous Google CSE (Custom Search Engine) service, developed to make search easier. This service allows you to close in, and ignore the apparently irrelevant results, which you can choose manually, or use one of many filters and algorithms. Scammers make it like that: their search engine searches only among a few infected pages so that user sees only them, and has no choice.

Each click on a fake link or search result makes scammers a few cents richer because that’s what it’s all about. All your clicks on the Internet are money. When you click on an ad banner – the advertising company receives a certain amount of money from the advertiser. In case of scammers, they either sell the “website promotion,” putting the website in their list and redirecting the customers to it or just redirect you to their own infected pages and make you download trashy programs.

How penetrates the system

It’s very simple: scammers take one relatively useful program (usually a pirated version of some paid program, or a free tool that can be easily downloaded on the official website of its developers), and wrap it into a bundle with three or more unwanted programs. The bundle can’t be opened, and you can’t see its content. You can only execute it and run the installation. This method has two major advantages over all other methods:

Malware can infest victim's PC in many ways, but certain malware prefers the certain ways. For example, Trojan viruses prefer the weak spots in program's code, advertising software developers most often use bundling and encrypting malware, usually prefers phishing. Affiliate installation depends on user's inattentiveness. In fact, this bundle comprises of one useful program and 3-4 viruses. The utilities in the bundle can only be installed at the same time, so if customer doesn't notice the pop-ups that emerge during the installation, he can lightly let them infest the computer. There is a dialogue window that lets user to choose between advised and advanced methods of installation. The regular technique is picked automatically, and if user doesn't uncheck it, he will get all the viruses in the bundle. There are few easy tips that will assist you avoid getting hacked through this method:

  • The bundled installation requires minimum efforts: scammers just create an adware bundle and put it on some file-sharing portal, for you to download it.
  • Scammers take minimum risks while using the bundled installation method, as they don’t break into victims’ computers: victims do everything by themselves. If you install any advertising tool in purpose and read its EULA, you’ll see that all its functions are perfectly described, so by accepting the user agreement, users admit and allow to show them tons of ads.

Now you know what is and how it got into your OS. The only thing you need to know now is how to get rid of it.
